This piece was inspired by the Test-pattern, which I remember from my childhood days- before television became a 24 hour thing:
A test card, also known as a test pattern or start-up/closedown test is a television test signal, typically broadcast at times when the transmitter is active but no programme is being broadcast (often at startup and closedown) – Wikipedia
and also partly inspired by the Nkisi figures from Africa:
Nkisi or Nkishi (plural varies: minkisi, zinkisi, or nkisi) are spirits, or an object that a spirit inhabits. It is frequently applied to a variety of objects used throughout the Congo Basin in Central Africa that are believed to contain spiritual powers or spirits. – wikipedia
