February Fiesta 2017

Studio news, Studio news/blog

“Her joys were shared, but her thrills were private”

The above words (unfortunately I cannot remember where I read it and don’t know who to credit) but it more or less sum up my February experiences.

-Apologies to my non-Afrikaans-speaking fellows- tonight I think with my mother-tongue:

Ek het ongelooflike, inspirerende, passievolle mense hierdie maand ontmoet.

Een van hulle was Amanda Strydom. Vanaand wil ek hierdie graag met julle deel:

Een van haar ander opnames getitled: “Die Plukker” – kon ek nie op die internet opspoor om met julle te deel nie, maar hier volg die gedig geskryf deur Deon Opperman:

Die Plukker

Ek sien ’n sonryp perske,

daar doer bo aan ’n tak,

hy groei daar en hy gloei daar,

vol sap en lig gepak.

Ek haal my hoogste trapleer,

want dit moet mens verstaan,

’n plukker moet sy klim ken

as hy ’n boord ingaan.

Ek dra my trapleer na die boom,

en plaas hom net mooi reg,

so met die eerste trapslag

klim ek die aarde weg.

Al hoër en al hoër,

op boontoe na die vrug,

al hoër en al hoër,

my mandjie op my rug.

Verby tak, blaar en wolke,

trap vir trap, dis ver,

verby die maan, verby die son,

verby planeet en ster.

So hoog klim ek dat onder

sien ek die heelal draai,

en bo my kop die goue vrug

waar hemelswinde waai.

Aan die toppunt van my leer

huiwer ek ’n ruk,

dis moeilik, selfs ’n kuns

om so ’n ding te pluk.

Dan reik ek uit en vat hom,

sy sap kan ek al proe,

laat val hom in my mandjie

en dra hom aarde toe.

Dié vrug deel ek met almal,

ek sê: neem, eet en glo.

hierdie stukkie perske

Title:"Hou van aan jou drome"

Title:”Hou vas aan jou drome”

Elke kunstenaar wat genomineer was vir n Fiesta het so n beeld ontvang!

Ter afsluiting en opsomming: hier volg n kort video vanuit Hugo van Schalkwyk se oogpunt 😉

This is a ‘breathtaking’ moment for me since it is the 3rd time that my work is nominated for this award. (previous years 2012 for “Skeidingsangs” and 2015 for “Rubber ever After”!)

What an honour to be nominated amongst fellow artists like Alex Hamilton, Amanda Botha and Lien Botha!

Bets Taute and the dinosaurs

Today the 16th of January would have been my mother’s birthday.  If she survived the car crash 19 years ago, she would have been 59.

I wish I could share the news with her that I have been nominated for a KykNet Fiesta 2015 award for my exhibition: Rubber ever after in the category for:” Best accomplishment in Visual Art”!!!!

This announcement was made last night: see here: http://kyknet.dstv.com/2015/01/15/vyfde-kyknet-fiestas-gaan-groot/

I am honoured to be nominated alongside fellow artists: Diek Grobler, Gerhard Marx and The Little Marionette Company!

So yes, today is kind of bittersweet …..but thanks for letting me share it with you.
